Anxiety
Anxiety is an unpleasurable affect in which the individual experiences a feeling of danger whose cause is often unconscious. Built in as part of the fight or flight response we humans relied on in times of physical attack, anxiety is frequently triggered in our modern living in response to imagined dangers.
Psychodynamically, anxiety is often seen as a carryover from a younger age in which the child felt alone and at risk but had no way of talking about it and no way of gaining a perspective on the perceived danger. Psychotherapy can often assist those who are anxious or experiencing anxiety and panic conditions to get a more realistic sense of the threat they are facing and come to a better understanding of the role anxiety has played in the their lives, and how to make better use of the guidance anxiety is meant to provide.
