About Katy Petre
When I was a child my family emigrated from Europe to Toronto. I started grade one without speaking a word of English and the process of coming to understand others became vitally important. I have never tired of learning.
Following graduation in arts from the University of Toronto, I worked as an elementary school counsellor. My Master’s degree in counselling helped me to realize that with all their depths and complications people are looking for more than advice. So I enrolled in the Centre for Training in Psychotherapy (CTP) and graduated in 2001. At CTP we studied a diverse range of theorists in depth psychology while undergoing our own rigorous individual and group therapies.
As part of my ongoing professional development, I have studied Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Stan Tatkin model of couples therapy, and specialized trauma work called Sensorimotor Psychotherapy.
I am a member of the Canadian Association for Psychodynamic Therapy (CAPT) and I am registered in the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).
What happens in a therapy session
We will meet regularly in a safe, quiet, confidential space located on the second floor of my home in the leafy neighborhood of High Park. We will work with whatever issue is most important to you on any given day. Your boundaries and vulnerabilities will be respected; you alone will control the pace and scope of our explorations.
Unlike the medical model, my approach does not rely on labeling or pathologizing external behaviours or medicating symptoms. By examining your life events, dreams, and past and current relationships — including our own unfolding relationship – we will explore the underlying issues that prevent you from living more freely, creatively and authentically.
The answers to your questions reside, not in your therapist, but ultimately inside yourself. I simply serve as a responsive mirror to the richness and uniqueness of your inner life, helping to deliver your true self to the light of fuller consciousness. I believe it is human beings who harm us in the beginning—and it is human beings who can heal us in the end.
I provide a free 20-minute phone consultation.
