“Real isn’t how you are made,’ said the Skin Horse. It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.” – Margery Williams Bianco, The Velveteen Rabbit

Perhaps like yours, my path has been a winding one. My post-secondary learning began in the STEM fields, with undergraduate studies in Engineering Physics (McMaster University), and a Masters degree in Medical Biophysics (University of Toronto). Always compelled by personal experience to wonder about the human condition -“Why do we do the things we do?” – my early research focused on functional neuroimaging techniques to study the link between brain activity and behaviour.

Eventually, I found myself sitting in a chair, facing my own psychodynamic psychotherapist, and I began to understand the value of choosing my own Self as a subject worthy of study. What I’ve learned in that chair has ignited my curiosity, freed my heart, and called me to this professional practice. I am a graduate of The Centre for Training in Psychotherapy.

I have devoted spirit, mind, and body to collaborations in music-making and competitive sport, and also to my role as a mother of two remarkable little people, who teach me more on the subject of being human than anyone else ever could.

What happens in a therapy session

I consider psychodynamic psychotherapy to be, fundamentally, a learning process focused on your Self – your thoughts, feelings and behavioural patterns, your fantasies, wishes and fears, the realities of your developmental history – and any discord therein.

This kind of learning makes use of an Other – someone you can ask to listen as you express your Self, and who can provide attention, compassion, and perspective in that listening – to support you in finding ways to hold it all together. This is what I endeavour to do for you.

What you learn in this process can empower your creativity, helping you to make more informed decisions and pursue more authentic actions, in the effort to realize a life that, indeed, you want to live.

Getting Started

You are most welcome to call or email me to arrange a free, 30 minute telephone consult. In that initial conversation, you can introduce yourself and what brings you to therapy, and I can say more about my approach to this work. From there we can decide how to proceed with scheduling ongoing, weekly, 50 minute therapy sessions.
